What a Mastercard deposit really costs you

A card deposit is usually instant and usually free at the casino's end. The cost, when there is one, comes from your bank: many treat gambling deposits as a cash advance rather than a purchase, which means a fee of a few percent and interest that starts the day it posts instead of at the end of your statement period. Check your card's terms for "cash advance" and "gambling", not the casino's page.

Withdrawals are where cards fall down. A card refund can take three to five working days to appear after the operator approves it, and it can only be pushed back to the exact card that funded the account — a card that has expired, been reissued after fraud, or belonged to a now-closed account simply cannot receive it. When that happens the operator normally falls back to bank transfer, which needs its own verification and adds days.

Almost every licensed casino applies a closed-loop rule: money goes back the way it came, at least up to the amount you deposited. That is an anti-money-laundering requirement, not a preference, and it means the method you choose to deposit with is usually the method you are stuck with on the way out.

In the United Kingdom this is not a preference at all: since April 2020 the Gambling Commission has banned credit cards for gambling outright.
